Students, It is time to type and upload your written assignments on a google doc file. We will work with the same one we previously used to annotate the information of your sources, just start writing on the next page. Important: This is the last chance you will have to correct your work so:

  • Make sure you have corrected all your spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary mistakes.
  • If you still have questions, ask your teacher.
  • Under no exception, copy new information from the Internet.
  • Make sure that you have cited properly and that your task does not have literal information that could be regarded as “plagiarised”. Your work has to be 100% original.
    • Remember that you should cite in the following way:
      • As stated/mentioned/suggested by Royce, “the people who need more attention…
      • This citation should be related to your own sources.
  • Write first your “Rationale”, then your “Written assignment” and finally your “Sources”.
  • At standard level, candidates are required to provide the bibliographical information (title, author, publisher, date, web address, etc as appropriate) of the three or four sources used, the number of words in the task and the rationale, and to confirm the core topic that the written assignment relates to.

1: Rationale (word count:XXX) …………………………………

2: Written task (word count:XXX) …………………………………

3: Bibliography

Written Assignment (Exam) General Information

Written assignment SL: Composed of two texts, a Task (300-400 words, excluding bibliography) and a Rationale (150-200 words).

The Task: Students produce a piece of writing that can be a “Diary entry”, ” Interview”, “News report”, “Set of instructions, guideline”, “Written correspondence”, “Blog entry”, among others.

Rationale: Students produce a piece of writing that must include 1.- “The subject investigated”, 2.- “A brief description of each of the sources”, 3.- “The student’s intended aim(s) and 4.- “Explanation of how the student intends to achieve his aim-choice of text types, audience, register, style and so on. Click on this link for further information on how to write a rational: https://g15languagebslmackay.wordpress.com/2014/05/31/how-to-write-a-rationale/

Text-type samples:

1.- Diary entry: In a diary entry you narrate events that already took place. For a diary entry you must write in 1st person (use pronoun “I”) and use past tenses.

2.- Interview: The interview must start with an introduction to the topic discussed. Remember that in an interview there have to be at least two individuals interacting, therefore questions and answers must be perfectly written and they must show a coherent dialog. (This is similar to what you did in your Interactive Oral activity based on Global Issues)

2223917

3.- News report: This document is intended to inform a specific audience about a specific event. Titles and subtitles (headlines) are recommended and several paragraphs should be written. As with this text-type requires the use of more complex grammar structures it is only advised for students whose grammar is strong.

4.- Set of instructions, guidelines: In this text-type you need to specify the procedure to carry out a task. You will need to use verbs in imperative as well as modals, such as: Need to, have to, must, should, would, etc. (This is similar to the text you wrote for the Phantom of the Opera Glogster project)

5.- Written correspondence, “Formal and informal letters”:

Formal letter: The formal letter is usually sent to companies or people who represent them; so, formal language has to be used.  The use of full words is expected like Television instead of TV, or Photograph instead of Photo. Use words like “please”, “I would appreciate if”, “Could you”, instead of direct imperatives.

Informal letter: The informal letter is usually sent to friends, so you can use informal language and contracted forms like I’ll, I’d. You can use abbreviations and imperatives in the document, which does not mean that it may contain mistakes.

6.- Blog entry: A blog entry is an interactive electronic document in which you develop personal ideas about a specific topic. In this text type, you are expected to write in an amusing and engaging way, so readers feel motivated to read your blogs. In terms of grammar, a complex variety of structures is expected.

How to write a Rationale

Not only in today’s task you will have to write a rationale, but also in your written assignment which is the first IB Official External Assessment that we will be carrying out this year (it is also your first school examl!!!!)

Therefore, it is important that before writing one, you know what a rationale is. So…

What is a rationale?

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, rationale is ” an explanation of controlling principles of opinion, belief, practice, or phenomena”. When writing a rationale, you need to say what your wrote, how and why.

If you still find it too difficult to write the rationale for your Written Assignment, you can use the following structure:

Paragraph 1: what were you trying to do (tone, purpose, audience to reach?)
Paragraph 2: How did you try to do that…give examples from your piece.
Paragraph 3: How did you connect to your topic option? (Communication and Media, Social Relationships, Global Issues)
Example…I wrote a (TEXT TYPE YOU CHOSE, for example: blog entry, diary entry, interview, magazine article, newspaper report, friendly letter) about (TOPIC OF YOUR TEXT, for example: the importance of maintaining religious traditions in the celebration ofChristmas). It was written with a ________ tone (examples of TONE for your writing: angry, clear, formal, humorous, informal, ironic, optimistic, pessimistic, sad, serious) and hopes to address a ________________ audience (AUDIENCE OF YOUR TEXT, for example: intellectual, adult, teenager, school students)

In my _________ (YOUR TEXT TYPE) I tried to use ________________ (TYPE OF
LANGUAGE YOU USED, for example: formal, informal, technical language, a 1st person/3rd person perspective, adult humor, verbal irony, childish language, etc) with phrases like “___________________” and “_______________”.
I tried as well to use a _______________ level of vocabulary (for example: sophisticated,  technical, specific, simple, easy-to-understand) with word choices like “________________” and “____________________” . Using these elements I feel I reached my  purpose of ______________ (examples of purpose: making readers reflect upon the importance of tradition for society; informing readers about the pros and cons of spending too much money in New Year’s Eve, etc)

This task addresses the core topic of SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS and specially addresses the
topic of CELEBRATIONS, SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS EVENTS . I chose a (YOUR TEXT-TYPE) to do this because I felt that in this way I could _________________________________ (REASONS  WHY YOU CHOSE THIS TEXT TYPE, for example: because I could best express what I learned from the topics we studied in this unit and how I feel about them)
