Censorship: “The last temptation of Christ”

I- INTRODUCTION

Have you ever heard about this movie? What do you think it is about? Why should it be an example of censorship?.   Here is a brief description of the plot: The Last Temptation of Christ is a 1988 fictional drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is a film adaptation of the controversial 1953 novel of the same name by Nikos Kazantzakis. It stars Willem Dafoe as Jesus Christ, Harvey Keitel as Judas Iscariot, Barbara Hershey as Mary Magdalene, David Bowie as Pontius Pilate, and Harry Dean Stanton as Paul. The film was shot entirely in Morocco. Like the novel, the film depicts the life of Jesus Christ and his struggle with various forms of temptation including fear, doubt, depression, reluctance and lust. This results in the book and film depicting Christ being tempted by imagining himself engaged in sexual activities, a notion that has caused outrage from some Christians. The movie includes a disclaimer explaining that it departs from the commonly accepted Biblical portrayal of Jesus’ life, and is not based on the Gospels. In the film, Jesus is depicted as building crosses for the Romans, being tormented by the voice of God, and lamenting the many sins he believes he has committed. Because of these departures from the gospel narratives—and especially a brief scene wherein Jesus and Mary Magdalene consummate their marriage—several Christian fundamentalist groups organized vocal protests and boycotts of the film prior to and upon its release. The protests were effective in convincing several theater chains not to screen the film;  one of those chains, General Cinemas, later apologized to Scorsese for doing so. In some countries, including Turkey, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina, the film was banned or censored for several years. As of July 2010, the movie continues to be banned in thePhilippines and Singapore. (Adapted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Temptation_of_Christ_(film)#Controversy) A- Who is the director of the movie? B- Who is the author of the book on which this movie was based? C- What is William Dafoe’s role in the movie? D-Why was this movie censored in so many countries?.   Here are two videos. The first one is the trailer of the film and the second, a scene of Jesus’ speech.  Can you identify in these videos any elements that would justify the censorship of this movie? What do you think about censoring such controversial topics?.

II- READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITY.

CHILE: Conservatives Keep ‘Last Temptation’ from Screens Gabriel Canihuante SANTIAGO, Jan 23 1997 (IPS) – Conservative sectors in Chile scored another victory this week when a court decided to maintain the ban on Martin Scorsese’s movie “The Last Temptation of Christ” In response to a request from the moralist organization “The Coming of Christ”, a Court of Appeals in Santiago decided unanimously to maintain the prohibition against showing the controversial film. Showing of the film was banned in 1988, during a time when Chile was governed by a military dictatorship. But the ban remained in place even after the restoration of plural democracy. Cinemas were ready to show the movie following a re-evaluation last year by the state Council for Film Ratings. But “The Coming of Christ” took the matter to the Court of Appeals. The court decision was celebrated by members of the organization. In the past few years it has waged a well-run campaign against several television programmes and other artistic expressions which it regards as dangerous for Christian values of Chilean society. “Freedom of expression cannot trample people’s honor; neither can artistic expression”, argued Francisco Donoso, a lawyer and representative of the conservative organization, who praised the court ruling. In their decision, the three judges who examined the case argued that the film “threatens and weakens the right to honor the figure of Christ — both as God and as a human being — and the freedom of conscience”. “The film offends, weakens and denigrates not only Christ (…) but also those who base their faith on Christ Redeemer and God”, they argued. The Court of Appeals’ decision sparked criticism. Patricio Westphal, coordinator of the Universal Movement Against Censorship (MUAC) said the judges “are not experts on the subject and cannot become cultural arbitrators, especially in a debatable and complex subject such as this one”. It is like that the matter will be taken to the Supreme Court — the highest level of the Chilean justice system. Moralists are not worried about a new battle. “The decision (of the Court of Appeals) seems too convincing to be revoked,” said Francisco Donoso, the lawyer and representative of “The Coming of Christ”. Movie theaters in Santiago may not exhibit Scorsese’s film at least for now. But in several movie theaters in the capital one can see — with certain age restrictions — many pornographic films and others with high levels of violence, which the moralists have not been able to censor. (Source: http://www.ipsnews.net/1997/01/chile-conservatives-keep-last-temptation-from-screens/) Questions 1- Explain the following quote in your own words: “Freedom of expression cannot trample people’s honor; neither can artistic expression” 2- According to the text, why should judges not decide on moral topics? 3- What is the reason why the author of the article refers to pornographic films as shown in some theaters of Santiago?.   Protests a) In the following videos you will be able to see people’s different opinions toward the movie. Take notes on the aspects that you consider most relevant. Video 1: A debate on the movie on Oprah Winfrey program (watch until minute 11:00) A boy giving his opinion about the movie .   b) Take a look at the following photos and choose 1. Then, write down a 250-word description of it related to the topic discussed (censorship). Use some of the following words in your description: Restriction – Control – Blasphemy – Forbid – Prohibit – Right – Infringement of rights – Approval – Recommendation – Authorization – Sanction – Taboo. Finally, upload the photo and description on your blog. Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo 3

III- INTERACTIVE ORAL ACTIVITY

April, Monday 7th In this activity you will be assessed on Communication and Media. The topic will be “censorship”. It is important that you read both texts “Cartoon violence makes children more aggressive” and “CHILE: Conservatives Keep ‘Last Temptation’ from Screens”, so you are clearer about this topic.

You are going to watch a video from CBS News that discusses the issue of the use of N-word in Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. In 2011, this book suffered a modification from its original version in the Southern States from the United States that replaced the “N-word” with “slave”, used more than 200 times.

Click here to access the interactive oral worksheet.

You will be assessed following the IB Interactive Oral Activity rubric for SL

AD CREATION

This week is all over creating your shoe advertisements.

Ms. Veronica’s class will start by doing some grammar exercises pending from last Friday and Sir Julio’s class will start by completing a handout.

These tasks will be carried out with the help of the iPads and the App PAGES during Monday and Tuesday lesson. The first step is to go over the rubric all together.

In today’s class, you will fill in the preparation handout, for you to order your ideas and assure a good grade.

After that, you can access safari to search for the shoes you want to advertise. Finally, click on PAGES  App to start creating your ads.

GOOD LUCK and tons of creativity!

Upcoming evaluation

PRE-reading:

If you were a parent of a child your age, what rules or guidelines, if any, would you establish to determine what entertainment (movies, television shows, video games, internet sites, music, etc.) your children could watch, listen to, or play? Why?

WHILE-reading:

By October 2013, five universities in the U.K had banned Robin Thicke’s song “Blurred Lines” not only because of its video, but also because its lyrics were considered sexist and promoting rape.

The N°1 mega-hit became one of the most controversial songs of the decade and not for good reasons by opening the door of what pop lyrics and music videos have to offer.

Read the opinion column written by USC student Judy Lee and answer the following questions:

TASK 1:

Which of these sentences are true according to the text:

A. Thicke’s song has been a hot topic for more than a year

B. At two places, “Blurred Lines” cannot be played at any times

C. Robin Thicke and his song are the only sponsors of violence and irresponsible sex

D. The issue of censorship is bigger than what people think

E. According to the writer, banning things is not the solution

TASK 2:

Look at the underlined words and match them with their definitions. There are extra words!

Tobacco ads: Where?

Since 2011, each pack of cigarettes sold in Canada and the United States must display graphic images of the  health effects osmoking either directly on the package or on a slip of paper within the carton. These regulations were passed in attempt to break the cultural connotations that some brands of cigarettes have in popular culture. One example is the Marlboro Man, an ad campaign created by Leo Burnette circa mid 1950’s. The ultimate American cowboy and masculine trademark, it helped establish Marlboro as the best-selling cigarette in the world.

The campaign has continued, and has been criticized for luring new  customers into the aura of smoke that Marlboro creates.Cigarette commercials are rarely seen in magazines and since the 1970s, have been banned from television and movie previews. The tobacco industry has only one platform left – the cigarette package. It’s four sides are what the customer sees first, and so concentration has been focused here, by both the Tobacco Manufacturing Association (TMA) and healthcare and government regulators.

(Information retrieved from urbantimes.co)

But what would you have seen if tobacco ads were still allowed on TV?

What do you think about them? Were they appealing? Were they using any Pathos, Logos or Ethos?

Have a look at the following handout were some techniques for tobacco advertising are described. Think an example for each of them.

Tricks of the Trade

Task 1:

You are going to see five different ads. Please answer these questions for each of them:

What are the marketers saying about smoking?

How do they make smoking a desirable activity?

How do they downplay the negative side effects of smoking?

Who is the targeted audience?

What method/s of persuasion is/are being used?

Communication & Media (Advertising)

I.- What do you think about commercials nowadays? Are there any commercials on TV that you like better than others? What characteristics does a commercial have to have in order to be successful? Have you ever bought anything that you did not actually need, but was well advertised and convincing?

Watch the following sample and give your opinions:

Can you recall a commercial that appeals to people’s emotions?

III.- Important concepts to manage: Target Audience and Stereotypes. What are those?

Target Audience: The intended group for which something is performed or marketed; the specific group towhich advertising is directed (dictionary.com)

Stereotype: A simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group: The cowboy and Indian are American stereotypes. (dictionary.com)

Read pages 26 and 29 on your IB Course Companion book and then decide what the “target audience” is and how the “stereotype” is as portrayed in the following ads

IB: What’s next?

Dear students,

As you know last year you started with your two-year course on English B and understanding what comes next is a MUST.

UNITS?

The course is composed by three Core Topics:  SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS, GLOBAL ISSUES and COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA. Studying them is out of questioning as they are compulsory!

The course is also composed by Five Options: Cultural diversity, Customs and traditions, Health, Leisure and Science and Technology. Only two options from this group are compulsory and the chosen ones are:  SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (studied in 2013) and HEALTH (to be studied in 2014).

In total you will have to study 3 Core Topics + 2 Options = 5 units

ASSESSMENTS?

The Assessments of the IB are divided into INTERNAL and EXTERNAL, but there are in total 5 evaluations that you need to sit.

The EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS are 3: Paper 1, Paper 2 and Written Assignment.  The WA is a piece of written work based on the Core Topics will be done during this year and will be your first Exam (July). Paper 1 and 2 will be taken during May 2015.

The INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS are 2: Individual Oral and Interactive Oral. The Individual Oral is a photo description  based on the Options and will be recorded in November as it is your second Exam. The Interactive Oral is based on the Core Topics: you need to take three of these tests and the best grade out of those three will be sent out to the IBO. You already did one (the debate on tattoos and dress codes (2013) which means this year, you will do the remaining two.

In the following image, the percentages of each evaluation are stated. It is important that you understand that you need to do all of them. Otherwise, you will be towards failing your IB and NOBODY wants that!
